How long have you been a member at Cave CrossFit?

Just over one year

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

Crossfit has significantly changed my level of fitness, I used to think I was in shape, but quickly realized I was not as in shape as I thought. I’m stronger now than I have ever been, but more importantly, it has changed my life and lifestyle. Before Erin (my wife) dragged me into a CrossFit gym in Queens, which I did not want to do…I was developing bad lifestyle habits and had they continued would have ruined my personal relationships. Joining a CrossFit gym gave me a competitive spark and a solid routine that I hadn’t had since playing sports. It also made working out tolerable and gave us something to do together, which was huge for us. I was instantly hooked after the first day. I changed my diet completely which has erased some health issues I used to have and has given me a lot more energy. I think the second most important thing it has done however, is introduced me to some of my very good friends for life. It made moving to Florida and settling in a lot easier, and the same can be said when we moved to LA a little over a year ago.

What is your athletic background?

I grew up playing hockey and baseball since the age of 5, and played football until junior year of high school.

Favorite WOD:

Tough question, because there are a lot of good ones, but ultimately I think it comes down to “AMANDA” for me. Short, sweet, and nasty. Two of the most satisfying movements (Muscle Ups & Squat Snatch) in CrossFit combined into one workout.

Least Favorite WOD:

The Bergeron Beep Test. Look it up…total mental mind game.

Favorite Lift/Movement:

Squat Snatch is by far my favorite movement. This is one of the hardest and most technical lifts in CrossFit but when you nail one, nothing feels more satisfying, like hitting a baseball on the sweet spot of a bat.

Least Favorite Lift/Movement:

I hate anything Kettlebells/Wall balls/Rowing. Mainly movements that suck for shorter people like myself. But I will crush an air squat.

What are your proudest achievements?

In terms of CrossFit, double body weight back squat, hitting a 210# squat snatch, and a 275# squat clean (those days might be gone)

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

It’s always been a goal to continue to improve in the open each year until I just can't keep up with the young guys anymore, but right now I wouldn’t mind trying to finish under 1,000 in the SoCal region (which is a beast of a region, so that’s a tall order). Oh and maybe get back to those old numbers of mine.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started?

Yea for those thinking about it…get in there and try it out, leave your ego at the door just like everyone starting out should do, because you will be humbled real quick. You’re not alone, we have all been there, nervous full of anxiety trying to decide if we should try it…do it, it’s not as bad as you think. There is a reason you’re thinking about doing it, so walk in and see what it’s all about, more likely than not someone friendly will greet you at the door. For those just starting (and even those thinking about it), this is a big cliché in the CrossFit world but it’s so true… ”get comfortable being uncomfortable”. Crossfit forces you to get out of your comfort zone and that is a very good thing. This is what spills over into everyday life. Don’t ever compare yourself to anyone else in the gym or in CrossFit around the world, set your own goals and push yourself. But the most important thing to remember is to have freaking fun, we aren’t curing cancer, we are working out together. Laugh, smile, have fun and make some friends!

Name:

Spencer Corwin

Age:

24

Profession:

I currently work in real estate finance but I am actively looking to break into private equity or investment banking.

How long have you been a member at Cave CrossFit?

About 6 months.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

I’ve always been an athlete but not like this. The main change is my size and body composition. I keep growing out of my clothes!

What is your athletic background?

I’ve been a distance runner essentially my entire life. I ran cross country and track in high school and college.

Favorite WOD:

All of the WODs.

Favorite Lift/Movement:

Deadlift and clean and jerk.

Least Favorite WOD:

I like them all, I really do.

Least Favorite Lift/Movement:

I used to really dread snatches and overhead squats, but I’m getting so much better at them that it’s hard to say I don’t like them.

What are your proudest achievements?

Some of my proudest athletic achievements still come from my running career. I’m incredibly proud of the work I did as captain of my high school and college cross country teams.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

My younger brother and my father are both experienced CrossFitters so it’s a matter of pride that I become stronger and fitter than both of them, which is an ongoing battle.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started?

Keep working hard every day and you will really see results. It’s so much fun.

How long have you been a member/Coach at Cave CrossFit?

I have been a member of Cave CrossFit since April / Coach since July.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

I saw CrossFit one summer while I was working at a front desk in a gym in NC. I was watching the Games on ESPN and immediately said this looks awesome and those women look crazy scary! I was hooked from seeing it on tv and from that moment on I went to the main site every day and attempted the WOD on my own. I did this off and on for a few years. CrossFit has gotten me in the best shape of my life and pushes me to become a better person every day.

What is your athletic background?

I have played football since I was about 11. Played one year of College football before transferring to becoming a beach bum. I have been working out since I was in the 6th grade when my dad purchased a bench and squat rack to put in the attic. There is nothing I love more then getting a good workout in.

What do you love most about coaching?

The one thing I love about coaching is passing on my knowledge to others. I love to learn as much as I can and enjoy passing that knowledge to each athlete. I love it when an athlete gets it and you see that ”ah ha” moment happen.

Favorite WOD:

Murph

Favorite Lift/Movement:

Power Clean

Least Favorite WOD:

Anything with Rowing!

Least Favorite Lift/Movement:

Squats

What are your proudest achievements?

CF-L1, Bench press 300, ran a marathon with 1 week notice and my longest run before that was 3 miles.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

I have many goals and personal records I would like to accomplish through CrossFit if I had to choose 1, it would be to compete. Doesn’t have to be the games but I would like to do some sort of competition.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started?

Don’t be afraid of CrossFit. Embrace it. A lot of people tell me they are scared because they hear that people always get hurt. Train smart, listen to your coach and you will be fine. If you are looking for an awesome workout and a great community of awesome people just walk though the door at Cave and you will find it all!
