February Athlete Spotlight: Emilee Bartusek

Emilee is virtually brand new to CrossFit but has already seen amazing results. She is currently going through her second Nutrition challenge at Cave and in only 3 months, has increased her Front Squat by 30 pounds and is starting to string together Toes-To-Bar. Meet Emilee Bartusek!

How long have you been a member at Cave CrossFit?

I have been a member for about 3 months.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

CrossFit has given me a community that has helped motivate me to accomplish fitness goals that I never thought were possible for myself. I am so much more educated now when it comes to fitness and nutrition. Not only that, but my endurance and strength have increased significantly, and I still have a long way to go.

What is your athletic background?

I have been an athlete my whole life. I grew up doing every sport, whether it was basketball, soccer or softball, I was involved. However, as I got older, I ended up devoting most of my time to swimming. I swam competitively for 11 years, year around. I was no stranger to the two-a-day practices - finding myself at the pool at five in the morning and back again in the afternoon. I am a competitor through and through. I don't know any other way to be!

Favorite WOD:

My favorite WOD is any WOD that doesn't have cleans or overhead squats in them. Those movements are the worst for me. Beyond that, I enjoy anything that pushes me to my limit.

Favorite Lift/Movement:

Favorite lift is push press and front squats

Least Favorite WOD:

Least fav WOD is when thrusters and wall balls are in the same WOD. Lots of the same movement!

Least Favorite Lift/Movement:

Least favorite lifts are cleans or overhead squats.

What are your proudest achievements?

When I first began, my max front squat was 85, and in just two months I was able to front squat 115. That is only one small part of what I have achieved at Cave. Even though I feel and am stronger physically, I also feel stronger mentally. It is so refreshing to do something that not only empowers my body but my mind as well.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

My goal right now would be to be able to do 5 consecutive strict pull-ups without a band. I also want to be able to RX in the WODs and build my conditioning/become stronger and faster all around.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started?

My advice or even encouragement for someone who is interested in CrossFit or who is just starting out would be: I have done a lot of sports and been a part of a lot of fitness programs; however, I can confidently say that I have not seen the results that I am seeing now from anything other than CrossFit. I think a lot of it has to do with the people at Cave because they motivate me and help educate me on not just my fitness but my nutrition as well. So for anyone thinking about joining, I say do it! When you do it though, remember that everything takes time, but if you stick with it, you won’t regret it!
