January Athlete Spotlight: Timmy Dougherty

To start the New Year, we're highlighting one of our firebreathers. He may smaller in stature but is massive in heart, grit and determination. Oh, and if you ever need someone to grab a drink with, Timmy's your guy!

How long have you been a member at Cave CrossFit?

Just over one year

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

Crossfit has significantly changed my level of fitness, I used to think I was in shape, but quickly realized I was not as in shape as I thought. I’m stronger now than I have ever been, but more importantly, it has changed my life and lifestyle. Before Erin (my wife) dragged me into a CrossFit gym in Queens, which I did not want to do…I was developing bad lifestyle habits and had they continued would have ruined my personal relationships. Joining a CrossFit gym gave me a competitive spark and a solid routine that I hadn’t had since playing sports. It also made working out tolerable and gave us something to do together, which was huge for us. I was instantly hooked after the first day. I changed my diet completely which has erased some health issues I used to have and has given me a lot more energy. I think the second most important thing it has done however, is introduced me to some of my very good friends for life. It made moving to Florida and settling in a lot easier, and the same can be said when we moved to LA a little over a year ago.

What is your athletic background?

I grew up playing hockey and baseball since the age of 5, and played football until junior year of high school.

Favorite WOD:

Tough question, because there are a lot of good ones, but ultimately I think it comes down to “AMANDA” for me. Short, sweet, and nasty. Two of the most satisfying movements (Muscle Ups & Squat Snatch) in CrossFit combined into one workout.

Least Favorite WOD:

The Bergeron Beep Test. Look it up…total mental mind game.

Favorite Lift/Movement:

Squat Snatch is by far my favorite movement. This is one of the hardest and most technical lifts in CrossFit but when you nail one, nothing feels more satisfying, like hitting a baseball on the sweet spot of a bat.

Least Favorite Lift/Movement:

I hate anything Kettlebells/Wall balls/Rowing. Mainly movements that suck for shorter people like myself. But I will crush an air squat.

What are your proudest achievements?

In terms of CrossFit, double body weight back squat, hitting a 210# squat snatch, and a 275# squat clean (those days might be gone)

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

It’s always been a goal to continue to improve in the open each year until I just can't keep up with the young guys anymore, but right now I wouldn’t mind trying to finish under 1,000 in the SoCal region (which is a beast of a region, so that’s a tall order). Oh and maybe get back to those old numbers of mine.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started?

Yea for those thinking about it…get in there and try it out, leave your ego at the door just like everyone starting out should do, because you will be humbled real quick. You’re not alone, we have all been there, nervous full of anxiety trying to decide if we should try it…do it, it’s not as bad as you think. There is a reason you’re thinking about doing it, so walk in and see what it’s all about, more likely than not someone friendly will greet you at the door. For those just starting (and even those thinking about it), this is a big cliché in the CrossFit world but it’s so true… ”get comfortable being uncomfortable”. Crossfit forces you to get out of your comfort zone and that is a very good thing. This is what spills over into everyday life. Don’t ever compare yourself to anyone else in the gym or in CrossFit around the world, set your own goals and push yourself. But the most important thing to remember is to have freaking fun, we aren’t curing cancer, we are working out together. Laugh, smile, have fun and make some friends!
