May Athlete Spotlight: Erin Mickelson

Name: Erin Mickelson

Height: 5′ 5″

Weight: 124

Age: 28

Profession: Accountant

How long have you been a member at Cave CrossFit? I just celebrated my one year anniversary with Cave in April!

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? CrossFit has completely changed how I view fitness. I’ve been active all of my life, but never with workouts that would push me so hard and give me such noticeable changes. I’ll admit that picking up the bar in my very first class was incredibly intimidating, especially being a woman. I would also get nervous jitters in the beginning waiting for the clock to start because being timed and measured was honestly nothing I had been exposed to before. Now I can’t imagine a proper workout that doesn’t include strength and pushing myself beyond what I think I can do mentally and physically. I will happily admit that my name is Erin and I am a CrossFit addict.

What is your athletic background? I grew up playing sports, mostly softball and volleyball. After school, I took up yoga, hiking, and other various ‘class’ workouts.

Favorite WOD: The Saturday morning WODs. I love getting to work with different partners each week.

Favorite Lift/Movement: Handstand push-ups!

Least Favorite WOD: Fran – the thrusters…

Least Favorite Lift/Movement: Overhead squats because I struggle with it the most

What are your proudest achievements? The first time I RXed a workout because I originally had a lighter weight, but was encouraged by other members to go for RX. It was a great feeling at the end of the WOD to see what can happen when you stop underestimating yourself.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? Defintely double unders and losing the band for pull ups. Getting these movements down will bring a whole new intensity level to my WODs.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started? Find a great box with great coaches (ahem, Cave) and just do it! Everything is scalable and you’ll be surprise what you accomplish in a short amount of time. Not to mention that the community you’ll become a part of is like nothing else. There are so many friendly, supportive, and inspiring people that you’ll honestly look forward to showing up every day.
